第76回「東南アジアの社会と文化研究会」を下記の通り開催します。

今回は、グローバル化、国際労働移動、ジェンダー、トランスナショナル・ファミリー等の幅広い研究で知られる社会学者のラセル・S・パレーニャス教授（南カリフォルニア大学）に、アラブ首長国連邦ドバイの移民家事労働者がおかれている状況を事例とする、マクロ構造とモラルの関係についてお話いただきます。

オープンな研究会ですので、ぜひお気軽にご参集ください。

Mobilizing Morality: Migrant Domestic Workers in Dubai

●発表要旨

This talk describes the labor conditions of Filipino domestic workers in Dubai. It primarily utilizes interviews conducted with domestic workers. While calling attention to the absence of their labor protection, this talk describes their labor conditions as falling under three prevailing cultural patterns: a) dehumanization; b) infantilization; c) recognition. This diversity questions the common view of domestic workers in Dubai as nothing-but abuse victims, an argument made by anti-trafficking activists. Countering the reduction of our understanding of domestic work to the structures that shape them, the talk argues that morals mediate market activities and result in a diversity of labor standards across households. It is hoped that this talk is timely and useful considering the recent opening of the Japanese market for Filipino domestic workers.

Rhacel Salazar Parreñas is Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at the University of Southern California. Her areas of research include labor, migration, transnational feminism, economic sociology, gender and the family. She analyzes how morals mediate the experience of unfree labor vis-a-vis the state, migrant community, and workplace. Professor Parreñas’s major monographs include: Servants of Globalization: Migration and Domestic Work, 2nd Edition (2015), Illicit Flirtations: Labor, Migration and Sex Trafficking in Tokyo (2011), and Children of Global Migration: Transnational Families and Gendered Woes (2005), all from Stanford University Press.
